Since Park Won-soon’s election as Mayor in 2011, Seoul Metropolitan Government has held the Seoul Town Meeting at least once a year and on 19 occasions in total. All of the more recent events can be viewed on youtube. The Seoul Town Meeting gives the opportunity for foreign residents in Seoul to participate in policy-making by expressing their opinions about life in Seoul and suggesting changes that could be made to improve the quality of life for foreign residents. In order to hear from as diverse a cross-section of Seoul’s foreign residents as possible, the Seoul Town Meeting has been held under various themes usually focusing on either residents holding a certain visa (e.g. foreign students, marriage migrants, business people etc.) or nationality (e.g. European, South Asia, Vietnam etc.). Of course, anyone is welcome to come and participate in any Seoul Town Meeting, even if they are not the main target audience and we also hold occasional general Town Meetings as well. Holding themed town meetings is not intended to be exclusive or divisive but rather to enable more people to give frank opinions in their mother tongue by providing simultaneous translation in languages other than English. I would also like to inform you about the Seoul Foreign Residents Council (http://global.seoul.go.kr/index.do?site_code=5102), which operates similarly to a City Council and where 44 foreign residents from a wide range of backgrounds who have been nominated by their local community meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues affecting the foreign community in Seoul and devise related policy proposals.
