This study was performed to investigate the contents of preservatives in mouthwash products. The concentration of six preservatives(methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, benzoic acid, and sorbic acid) were analyzed in 26 mouthwash products using HPLC. The calibration curves of the preservatives were linear over the concentration range 0.25∼50g/mL, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9999. The limits of detection(LOD) and quantitation(LOQ) of methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, benzoic acid and sorbic acid were 0.03 and 0.09, 0.01 and 0.03, 0.01 and 0.03, 0.03 and 0.09, 0.1 and 0.3, and 0.01 and 0.03g/mL. For this study, 26 commercial mouthwash samples were purchased in Seoul, in the form of tablets(3 samples), sprays(9 samples), and gargles(14 samples).
