초록
The use of natural products, such as the herbs that have long been used in Koreato treat diseases and maintain health as medicines, is now beginning to attract attention
in many fields of research. The use of medicinal herbs in food is also on the rise.
However unlike other herbs used for medicinal purposes that are regulated by the
Korean Pharmacopoeia, HMFD is regulated as a food, which means that control of its
quality is relatively limited. In this research, analysis of sulfur dioxides was used as a
measure of quality control and development of a safety measure for HMFD. A total of
603 samples covering 67 items were tested for sulfur dioxide. 36.2%(218 tests covering
57 items) contained sulfur dioxide, with 11.9%(26 tests covering 11 items) in the range
between 10 and 30 mg/kg and 6.0%(13 tests covering 6 items) higher than 30 mg/kg.
Domestic and imported Fructus Lycii both contained high residual levels of sulfur
dioxide(above 4,200 mg/kg). 3.6% of imported HMFD failed this quality control
measure, which is significantly higher than the 1.5% observed for domestic HMFDs.
Further monitoring and research is recommended to address concerns about using
food-based safety standards for regulating substances like HMFD rather than using the
standards applied to other herbs that have medicinal value.
